The Volunteer of Distinction award recognizes a REALTOR® who has gone above and beyond in supporting the REALTORS® Community Foundation through their time, energy and dedication to giving back.
This year’s recipient, Shaun Cunningham, has become a familiar face at Foundation volunteer initiatives and community events, helping support a wide range of local charities and causes. We spoke with Shaun about what motivates him to volunteer, the impact REALTORS® can have in their communities, and why he encourages more members to get involved.
What originally motivated you to become involved with the REALTORS® Community Foundation?
I was always interested in volunteering and had done some in the past directly with the charities, so when I learned about the RCF and all the opportunities they had available it was easier for me to sign up and do more. Most events are only 3 hours per day.
What has been the most rewarding part of giving your time and energy to the Foundation?
Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces, both from whoever we are helping as well as the volunteers. Then the feeling I get when I am leaving after helping at an event is fantastic.
Why do you believe community involvement is important for REALTORS® and the real estate industry as a whole?
I think community involvement is important for everyone who can give back and make our communities better. As for REALTORS® and the Real Estate industry it is important as we are working in all the communities in Edmonton and if we can help make them better then we should do this.
Is there a particular initiative, project, or moment with the Foundation that has meant a lot to you?
One of the best parts of doing this through the RCF is that they have many different charities that we help. I wouldn’t say that there is one that meant more to me than an another, but what I do like the most is learning more about the charities we help as there are so many good ones.
What would you say to fellow REALTORS® who are considering getting more involved with volunteering or charitable work?
